Roč is a charming medieval hilltop town in central Istria, steeped in history and culture. Dating back to at least the 11th century, Roč was originally an Illyrian settlement before becoming a Roman fortification. During the Middle Ages, it developed into a fortified town surrounded by defensive walls and gates.

Famous as a historic center of Croatian literacy, Roč played a crucial role in the preservation and advancement of the Glagolitic script — the oldest Slavic alphabet. The town’s Church of St. Anthony houses valuable Glagolitic inscriptions and frescoes, while the quaint streets and stone houses exude an authentic medieval atmosphere.

Visitors love wandering Roč’s narrow streets, discovering historic landmarks like the ancient town gate, the Church of St. Roch, and the local Roman lapidarium. Surrounded by lush hills, Roč offers stunning panoramic views and serves as a gateway to exploring the beautiful Istrian countryside.

The peaceful and intimate vibe of Roč, combined with its rich cultural heritage and proximity to nature, makes it a unique destination for history lovers and travelers seeking authenticity.
